Norton
Antivirus Updates
Very Important;
Norton/Symantec Antivirus; Symantec updates their virus definitions
every Thursday. This means that you will need to
update your virus definitions
weekly, on the weekend sometime.
The procedure is simple, look in the bottom right hand corner of
your screen and find the gold shield. You will need to double click
on that; this should bring up another window that will have a button
called “Live Update” click on this. Now just follow the prompts,
no need to change anything. When it is done you will click “Finish”
and you are done. Make sure you are online when doing this
procedure.
Windows
Updates
This one is crucial. When you receive
your PC/Laptop back, all current updates are completed, EXCEPT
"SERVICE PACK 2 OR SP2 for short. Many Problems have occurred
downloading SP2 update software. Many people find themselves looking
into a blue screen or crashed computer after downloading SP2.
Recently, Microsoft sources have indicated that SP2 issues have been
resolved. However, I have found that SP2 does not work on some older
software. There maybe something built into Service Pack 2 allowing
it not to conform with older software, thus forcing you to purchase
updated software. You may do other updates that are offered, but
PLEASE BE CAREFUL OF SERVICE PACK 2. Do not turn on automatic
updates, as this will automatically download SP2. Before downloading
any new services packs, contact up by phone or e-mail to ask if we
are aware of any service pack problems.
Pest Patrol
Scanning
This one is very important also;
This is an icon on your desktop called “Pest
Patrol it will remove spy
ware. If you see your computer slowing down or getting popups please
run this. Pest Patrol usually runs all the time in the background
and blocks most of the spy ware that I have found so scanning is not
necessary unless you have the above symptoms. To scan you’re hard
drive first double click on the icon and wait till it loads. The
left click once on the C:\ drive in the left window, then left click
on the add button. Up at the top you will see a start button, left
click on that. This should bring you to the next screen; just let it
do its work. When it’s done you will see “Finished” in the
bottom right hand corner of the window, click the select all button,
then the remove all button and finally the clear screen button and
you are done. You can now close the scan window.
Following
these procedures will help to keep your PC/Laptop clean of spy ware
and viruses.
